Nikon V1 on a bicycle

It has been a while since I have wrote here. The reason hasn't been that I would stopped using my Nikon 1 cameras. I just haven't had motivation to go through my images :)

One of the biggest test for my Nikon V1 was a biking trip to France in May. I had printed a rugged camera mount to take my camera with me on a biking trips. Idea was that I would be taking video occationally and for stills it would be easy to remove from the mount.

Here's a pic of that mount.

The setup worked well for stills, but for video it was swaying from side to another too much. Maybe I will make a v.2 for next summer. I also managed to drop that setup once on a tarmac. I forgot to tighten that quick releas screw and camera dropped nose first. V1 took one really small scratch and that quick release plate got a little bit bigger scratch, but lens broke from the inside. I did use it rest of the trip. But when I took to a service they said that there was no point to repair it. On that same drop broke also that Hoya HD circular polarization filter which is on that pic. I think it took the biggest hit.

Anyway, here are some shots from that trip. Most of the images are from Bugarach where we stayed couple nights.

Tampere with setting sun

Just had a little evening walk with V1 and 10-100 VR.I didn't had tripod with me so stabilizing the camera was really difficult with 15s shutter speed. Only one out of five of images was succesful.

This is from yesterdays walk. This time with V1 + 18.5mm. 18.5mm lens is better for images with bright lightsources. 10-100 VR has some really annoying lens flares in certain situtations.

Q1 / 2014 with Nikon 1 gear

Nikon V3 was finally introduced! With really intresting 70-300mm zoom lens. I am sure to be testing those as soon as they come to my local store. No doubt the V3 is really intresting. Mostly the tilting screen and better AF. More megapixels won't hurt either.

Last three months I have been focused on shooting normal life around me. No planned photography trips anywhere, just shooting when there is something to shoot. Basicly I have had one kit with me all the time. Nikon V1 + 10-100mm zoom lens. Even when we have couple weeks of -15C temperatures that kit was sitting in my car all the time without any problems with battery. One thing I noticed that EVF is really laggy when the camera is frozen. But that's about it.

Here are couple snapshots from this year. With Nikon V1 + 10-100mm.

Nikon 10-100 VR in the forest

Today the day was 5 hours and 22 minutes long. So I had plenty of time to take two shots with my newest zoom: 10-100mm f/4.5-5.6 VR  :)

Summary from the last 6 months of using Nikon 1 system

I have been lazy, I know it.
I haven't been shooting much for the last six months, but I did find couple images which could be presented here.

I have used the Nikon 1 system much more than my D800. I even had a one weeks trip to Spain where I didn't bring my D800 at all. It was the correct decision. There wasn't even one occasion where I wanted to have my D800 with me.

I have also started to practise shooting video with these little cameras and I am hoping to get something small to publish by the end of the February 2014. Biggest problem has been getting small enough accessories. Everything is designed for big DSLR cameras.

The Nikon 6.7-13mm wide angle lens hasn't found a way to my bag yet, but I did buy the new 10-100 superzoom when it came to a quite reasonable offer of just 399€. I haven't had time to test it in daylight, but in the end of this post the last shot is with that lens. I have a feeling that in future that lens might be attached quite much to my V1.

Summer photography with Nikon 1, 10-30 VR, AF-S 60mm macro and 30-110 VR

I studied and trained with several different styles and lenses on my vacation. Firstly I "glued" the Hoya HD circular polarizer on 10-30 VR lens. I haven't removed for over a month. It works great on it. I have a step-up ring for it, so I can also use better designed Nikon 52mm lens cap on it.

Nikon 60mm macro showed it's potential as a macro for Nikon 1 system. Especially after FT-1 v.1.10 firmware update. The butterfly and the fly are shot with the macro lens. Beautiful Demoiselle and birds are shot with 30-110 VR.

The Lesser Black-backed Gull is shot with Nikon 1 systems great Smart Photo Selector-mode. There is no change for getting that kind of picture with a first try without it. Smart Photo Selector can select images before the shutter is pressed so it enables to shoot images which happened before triggering the shutter :)

Holiday shooting with Nikon V1

Some pics from this week. First four are shot with 70-200/4. Macros are with 60/2.8 AF-S and the last one with 10-30 VR.
